Your net worth

How to use this calculator

Net worth is one of the clearest snapshots of your financial health. Start with the Assets group and enter the current value of everything you own — the cash in your bank accounts, your taxable investments, retirement accounts like a 401(k) or IRA, the market value of your home, your vehicles, and anything else of meaningful value. Then move to the Liabilities group and enter what you owe: your mortgage balance, car loans, student loans, credit card debt, and any other debts. The result updates instantly so you can see your true net worth at a glance.

How this is calculated

The math is simple. We total your assets, total your liabilities, and subtract one from the other: net worth = total assets − total liabilities. A positive number means you own more than you owe; a negative number means your debts currently outweigh your assets. We also show your debt-to-asset ratio, which is your total liabilities divided by your total assets, expressed as a percentage. A lower ratio means a stronger, more resilient balance sheet.

A worked example

Suppose you have $5,000 in cash, $30,000 in taxable investments, $50,000 in retirement accounts, a home worth $300,000, and $15,000 in vehicles. That adds up to $400,000 in total assets. Now suppose you owe $240,000 on your mortgage, $10,000 on car loans, $15,000 in student loans, and $3,000 on credit cards — that is $268,000 in total liabilities. Your net worth is $400,000 − $268,000 = $132,000, with a debt-to-asset ratio of 67%. Tracking this number once or twice a year shows whether you are moving in the right direction.

Tips to grow your net worth

Remember that net worth is a long game. Most people see slow progress at first, then faster growth as investments compound and debts shrink. Focus on the direction of the trend rather than any single snapshot.
