Tip Calculator

Work out a fair tip and split the bill cleanly between any number of people — no awkward math at the table.

Total to pay

How to use this tip calculator

Enter your bill amount (the pre-tip total from the check), pick a tip percentage, and set the number of people sharing the bill. The calculator instantly shows the total to pay, the tip amount, and what each person owes. Tap one of the quick chips — 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25% — to set a common tip rate in a single touch.

How this is calculated

The math is simple: the tip amount is your bill multiplied by the tip percentage, so a $50 bill at 18% gives $9.00. The total to pay is the bill plus that tip ($59.00). To split, we divide the total by the number of people, and we also show the tip portion each person covers. Everything updates the moment you change a value, so you can compare tip levels in seconds.

A worked example

Say four friends share a $50 dinner and want to leave a 20% tip. The tip works out to $10.00, bringing the total to $60.00. Split four ways, each person pays $15.00 — of which $2.50 is their share of the tip. If the group bumped the tip to 25%, the total would rise to $62.50 and each person would pay about $15.63. Seeing both the per-person total and the per-person tip makes it easy to settle up fairly, even when one person covers the card and everyone else pays them back.

Tipping norms vary by country

These defaults reflect common United States restaurant practice, where tipping 15–20% is customary because service staff often rely on tips as a core part of their pay. In many other countries the norms are very different: across much of Europe a service charge may already be included and a small round-up is enough, while in Japan tipping can even be seen as unusual. When you travel, check local custom rather than assuming a US-style percentage — and remember this tool is a quick helper, not a rule.
